Earthquake in Papua 7.1 on the Richter scale
Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) said the strongest earthquake measured
7.1 on the Richter scale.
Strong earthquake occurred about 10:16 pm Wednesday (16/6). Site BMKG then spread the threat of tsunami warning.
According to watchlist BMKG, epicenter located 123km southeast of Biak in Papua province at a
depth of about 10km.
Head of Earthquake and Tsunami BMKG Fauzi told the BBC that the tsunami warning was lifted one
hour after the quake was magnitude 7.1. Fauzi added near Biak earthquake was preceded
by a 6.2 magnitude foreshock and aftershock measuring 5.3 and 6.6.
Correspondents say some buildings damaged and collapsed in several places near the epicenter, including in Serui.
Papua police officers stating Yapen Island became the place worst affected due to earthquake vibrations. Police Chief Denny Yapen AKBP Siregar told the BBC that at least 20 homes damaged and a church collapsed.
According to Denny, the two victims who were killed allegedly buried under collapsed buildings.
He added that a strong earthquake pushing many residents out of the house and immediately ran to
higher ground, others gathered at a soccer field.
Yan Pieter Yarangga from Biak Island, told the Associated Press that hundreds of people out of
the house shortly setelag meraksan tremor.
"I'm running. I'm afraid there will be aftershocks," said Yarangga.
Residents several regions in eastern Indonesia also felt the quake. Before the earthquake in
Papua, in Palu, Central Sulawesi, rocked by a tectonic earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter
Scale (SR) on Wednesday morning at 8:52 pm.
According to reports BMKG site, no potential tsunami earthquake that was centered at 1.44 south latitude and 119.25 east longitude with a
depth of 10 kilometers.
The location itself is located in an earthquake 91 miles southwest of Palu.
Tectonic earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter Scale (SR) rocked the city of Ambon and surrounding areas on Wednesday at around
17:19 CDT. According to Fauzi from BMKG, the quake was felt in Palu, Sulawesi and around Biak not
interconnected, even with the lapse of time near each other.
